Rivet terminology Flashcards
What is sphere of influence
The area effected by the clamping force of the rivet
5D
What is edge distance
The distance between the centre of the fastener and the edge of the structure
What is pitch
The distance between adjacent rivet centres in the SAME row
4D
What is transverse pitch
The distance between the centre of rivets in ADJACENT rows
4D
What is rivet stagger
When rivets are offset from being inline so that they can be closer together and maintain the same sphere of influence
What does clearance do
Allows for rivet expansion
Prevents hole damage/skin buckling
prevents burrs
prevents protective coatings from being removed
What is the difference between solid and blind rivets
Solid rivets can be accessed from both sides
Blind rivets can only be accessed from one side
describe the three parts of a formed rivet
Manufactured head
Shank
Tail/shop head
Describe the allowance, grip, clearance
Clearance is the final hole size which allows for rivet expansion
What is the diameter and length of solid rivets measured in
Diameter is measured in 1/32 of an inch
Length is measured in 1/16
Describe the following rivet heads A AD B D DD E
A- Plain AD- Dimple B- Raised cross D- Raised Dot DD- Double dash (two raised dashes) E- raised ring
