Aircraft Structure definitions Flashcards
What is the skin
The smooth outer covering of the airframe
What is the frame
Transverse structural member.
Provides aerodynamic shape and rigidity
What is a former
Lighter than a frame, used more for shape
What is a stringer
A long continuous member that assists skin load carrying to other aircraft structures
What is a bulkhead
Major transverse member in the fuselage or wing and other structure
Divides the fuselage into compartments
What is a lightening hole
A hole in a member to decrease weight with strength maintained by flanging around the hole
What is a longeron
Main longitudinal structural member (heavier than stringer)
Travels longways down the fuselage
What is a stringer
Long continuous member that assists skin load carrying to other structural members
What is a stiffner
strip or beam attached to sheet to resist load.
Short component to stiffen localised area
What is a doubler
A piece of sheet or strip placed against aircraft skin to provide stiffness or additional strength
What is a cap
Longitudinal member at the top and bottom of a beam often called a boom
What is a web
Vertical member of a beam, spar or length of wing providing strength to resist shear and keep upper and lower booms apart
What is a boom
Longitudinal structural member of a spar
What is a rib
Structural cross pieces combining with spars and stringers to make the frame work of a wings, ailerons, elevators, rudders and stabilisers. (makes the aerofoil shape)
What is cantilever construction
Supported internally by structural members assisted by the skin
What is semi cantilever construction
Supported by external bracing
What is a spar
The main structural span wise member of an aerofoil.
Main part of the wing
What is an empennage
The tail unit consisting of horizontal and vertical stabilisers
What is a nacelle
Any auxiliary structure that encloses the power plant or other equipment
What is a cowl panel
Surrounds the power plant or other equipment to improve airflow
What is a fairing
A smooth covering over a joint or junction in an aircraft structure providing a smooth surface for the airflow, reducing drag
What is an access panel
A seperate or distinct part of the aircraft structure easily removed
Structural/stressed panel
Similar to access panel but more of a substantial design.
May need to be fitted IAW with SRM or MM prior to aircraft jacking or movement
What is a Fillet
An aerodynamic fairing giving radius at the junction of two surfaces
What is a tie
Diagnosable and in tension
What is a strut
Straight up and down
Compression
What is a beam
On the outside
Bending
What is a false spar
Spa wise load bearing member, not connected the aircraft fuselage
What is a cap
Longitudinal member at the top and bottom of a beam
