RIVERS - water cycle Flashcards
drainage basin
area of land drained by a river and its tributaries, separated by a watershed
area in which all the precipitation gets drained into one river and its tributaries
watershed
boundary between two drainage basins
often a high ground
precipitation
moisture falling from the atmosphere
e.g.: rain, hail, snow, sleet
infiltration
the process of precipitation soaking into the soil from the surface
percolation
the process of water sinking through the soil and into the layers of bedrock/porous rock
groundwater flow
the movement of water horizontally through the layers of underground rocks toward a river
throughflow
the horizontal movement of water, parallel to the surface towards the river channel
surface runoff (overland flow)
movement of water over the ground surface
usually happens due to slow infiltration or over-saturation of the soil
interception
definition catches the precipitation before it can reach the ground
slows down the flow
river discharge
the volume of water i the river channel (passing through a certain point per second)
measured in m3/sec
