What are interlocking spurs?

A

The slopes that form either side of the valley

Q

How do interlocking spurs form?

A

When a river is small in width, it is only able to erode downwards, therefore having no energy left to erode the slopes, so it takes the easiest course, flowing around the bottoms of the slopes instead.

Q

How is an oxbow lake formed?

A

When there is a dramatic meander in a river, the neck of the meander is gradually worn away, then, during flooding, the river takes a short-cut straight across the neck. Soon the loop of the meander gets sealed off and is turned into an oxbow lake.

16
Q

What are the four main types of transportation?

A

Traction, saltation, suspension, and solution

17
Q

What is deposition?

A

The process where material being transported by a river is dropped

18
Q

What is hydraulic action?

A

The power of water as it smashes against the river banks, air becoming trapped in the cracks in the rock of the river bank and bed.

19
Q

What is abrasion?

A

Pebbles grinding along the river bank and bed in a sand-papering effect

20
Q

What is traction?

A

Large boulders and rocks rolled along the river bed.
