Riversπππ¦ Flashcards
Ox-Bow Lake
This is a lake formed in the old river and was once a meander.
Erosion by hydraulic action continues on the outer bank of the meander.
Over time the neck of the meander gets thinner as seen in the diagram.
In times of flooding, the river gains speed and has the power to cut through the neck of the meander creating a new river channel.
Alluvium is spread onto the river banks and over time as flooding repeats, deposition cuts the meander off from the main river forming an ox-bow lake
Waterfall
This is a vertical drop formed in the youthful stage of a river.
Areas of soft rock and hard rock lie beside one another and the river begins to erode harder rock by hydraulic action and abrasion.
As this occurs a notch is formed which gets larger over time forming a verticle shape.
As erosion continues by abrasion, the river begins to erode a plunge pool behind the drop forming a waterfall. This is called a verticle erosion
