Rivers Flashcards
Whats a catchment area?
The area within the drainage basin
What’s a watershed?
The boundary of the drainage basin (edge of highland)
Name the four methods of transportation
Traction
Saltation
Suspension
Solution
What’s a confluence?
The point at which two rivers or streams join
What is traction?
Rolling stones along the river bed
What’s saltation?
Sand sized particles bounce along the river bed
What is suspension?
Silt and clay sized particles are carried within the water flow
What is solution?
Minerals are dissolved in the water
What is a drainage basin?
The area of land drained by a river
How is a V-shaped valley formed?
Vertical erosion by river erodes the river bed
Leaves sides exposed, these are weathered and loose material falls down the slope and carried away by the river resulting in a V-shape
How is a delta formed?
A river with lots of load hits the sea
And loses energy making it deposit it’s load, because the sea is sheltered and its currents aren’t strong enough to carry away the sediment it’s deposited in the mouth and forms islands of sediment the river is strained through
How can you manage flooding?
Channel enlargement Afforestation Artificial stores (reservoirs) Flood embankment (levees) Flood relief channels
