Rivers Flashcards
What land from are found in the upper course of the river
Waterfalls
How is a waterfall formed
Notch is formed by erosion which forms a notch in the river bed
Due to vertical erosion (hydraulic action) a plunge pool is formed
Through further erosion the waterfall is undercut and forms an overhang
When it is too heavy it collapses and the waterfall retreats eventually leaving a gorge
How is a meander formed
It is a depositional and erosional landform
On the outside of the river water flows fastest and hydraulic action and bends due to more friction
This is undercut forming a river cliff
On the inside water doesn’t have as much energy and due to this sediment is deposited on the inside forming a slip off slope
