Depressions And Anticyclones Flashcards
What is a high pressure weather system
An anticyclone
Name a low pressure weather system
A depression
What weather comes with a depression
Cooler temperatures
Rain
Strong winds
Name the clouds that can be seen in order of a depression
Cirrus
Cumulonimbus
Cumulus
Describe a depression
At the depression approaches: temperatures are cool and strong winds no rain cirrus clouds
As the warm front approaches: rain and drizzle as warm air is forced to rise
In the warm sector:temperatures increase mainly dry stratus clouds
At the cold front: temperature falls, cumulonimbus clouds, heavy rain
As the cold front moves away: scattered showers, cumulus clouds
Describe an anti cyclone
An anticyclone is a high pressure weather system
It involves circling air sinking and warming up as it nears the ground
Clouds do not form
Isobars are spaced apart so no wind
Calm conditions
No fronts so moves slowly
Describe a summer anticyclone
Cloudless skies and bright sunshine
At night temperatures fall rapidly through heat escaping through radiation as there are no clouds
Describe a winter cyclone
Fog or mist
Rapid cooling occurs due to lack of cloud cover
Water vapour condenses and becomes mist or fog
Low angle of the sun means that rays can’t disperse the fog
