Rivers Flashcards
What is a tributary
Where smaller rivers join a larger river
What is a confluence
A confluence is the meeting point of two rivers
What is a watershed
A watershed is the imaginary line at the edge of the water basin
What is the mouth of the river
The end of the river where it meets the sea
What is the sorce of the river
The starting point of the river
What is a valley
A valley is the area between high ground which usually has a river running through it
What is a floodplain
A floodplain is the area that could get flooded if the river overflows
Why does the river meander
Rivers meander because they take the path of least resistence so if the river flowed into insoluble rocks of very hard rocks it will meander around the insoluble rocks
What is the rivers bed
The bottom of the river
What is the river bank
The edge of the river
What is vertical erosion
Erosion downwards
What is lateral erosion
Erosion sideways
What iare the river transport processes
Traction
Solution
Suspention
Saltation
What are the 4 river erosion processes
Hydraulic action
Abraison
Attrition
Solution
What is Hydraulic action
Hydraulic action is when the force of the river traps air in the cracks of the rock and the pressure weakens the rock and eventually rocks fall into the river and are taken along with the river
