Rivers Flashcards
what are some features of river erosion in the upper course?
V shaped valleys and interlocking spurs, waterfalls and gorges
Is a V shaped Valley formed from vertical or lateral erosion?
vertical erosion
what are the processes of erosion?
abrasion, hydraulic action, solution, attrition
what are some features in the middle course of the river?
meanders and oxbow lakes
what are some features of the lower course of the river?
floodplains levees and estuaries
what does a waterfall or a gorge start off as?
hard rock on top of soft rock
what is hydraulic action?
the force of water hitting the the river bed and banks.
what is attrition?
when stones carried by the river knock against each other gradually making the stone smaller and more rounded.
what is abrasion?
when the load carried by the river repeatedly hits the bed or banks dislodging particles into the flow of the river
what is solution?
when the river flows over limestone or chalk the rock is slowly dissolved. this is because it is soluble in mildly acidic river water.
what are the processes of transportation?
traction, saltation, solution, suspension
when does deposition take place?
deposition occurs when the velocity of a river decreases and it no longer has energy to transport sediment so it deposits it.
