River Flooding Flashcards
Learn about river flooding
What is flooding?
Flooding is when a large amount of moisture is unable to flow in channels, overflows its banks and spreads onto surrounding land.
What is a river?
A river is a water body that flows in channels and has a source and a mouth
Mention 5 physical factors that cause river flooding.
- Climate Change *(Heavy Rainfall) (Long periods of glaciers)
- Steep Slopes
- Snow Melts
- Impermeable Rocks
- Dry Soil
Mention 5 human factors that cause river flooding
- Deforestation
- Urbanization
- Unsafe building locations
- Man - Made climate change
Mention 3 ways we can stop river flooding
- Overflowing Channels
- Creating wider and deeper channels
- Afforestation
Explain Overflowing Channels
(in terms of stopping flooding)
Heavy rain downpour can cause water to rise in channels or dams. Flood gates are opened to allow water into the sea or temporary storage lakes
Explain creating wider and deeper channels
Any drainage channel that is unable to prevent flooding, materials may be dredged out from the bed or banks to help widen and deepen the channel. This helps carry more water
Explain Afforestation
(in terms of stopping flooding)
Trees are planted near the river to reduce the amount of water that moves into the channels. This is because the leaves and roots of the tree absorb some of the water.
