significant ceremony or event that marks an important transition in a persons life often from one stage to the next. These rituals signify a change in status.
Reasons of rites of passages
- It relieves stress for individuals going through change in life and help them understand growth
-Help communities remain stable and unified because the inevitable life changes give a pattern and help people to anticipate the consequences
- To pass on transitions and religious moral values that society believes are vital for stability
The 3 step process
1: individual exits previous role
2: person is temporarily removed from the rest of the culture and celebrated
3: the individual is then returned to society in a new role, with new responsibilities, abilities, and level of respect
