1861 to 1865. Brigand uprisings in Southern Italy, in protest to government that felt only benefitted the “Mezzogiorno” bourgeois land owners and not peasants - had supported Garibaldi not because of nationalism, but promise of land reform and when not fulfilled they protested. Demonstrates that nationalism was not a key factor in Unification. In Palermo in 1866, 40,000 Italian soldiers were needed to put down Seven and a Half Days Revolt. Organised by disappointed former partisans who had joined Garibaldi’s “Mille”.
