Risks and benefits of ortho treatment Flashcards
What 3 things can impacted teeth cause?
Root resorption, can be associated with cyst formation, supernumeraries can prevent normal eruption
What 3 things can anterior crossbite cause?
Tooth wear, gingival recession, displacement on closure
What 2 things can a deep overbite cause?
Palatal ulceration, gingival stripping
Risk factors for root resorption
Type of tooth movement (prolonged high forces, intrusion, large movements, torque), root form (blunt, pipette, resorbed already), previous trauma, nail biting?
What is relapse?
Return of the features of the original malocclusion following correction
Features with high risk of relapse?
Diastema/space closure, rotation, instanding upper laterals, lower incisors proclination or crowding, anterior open bite, palatally ectopic canines, class 2 div 2, reduced perio support/short roots
Why is it important to provide retainer straight away after treatment for patient with bridge?
If no retainer the abutment holding the pontic likely to relapse
What could make loss of vitality during ortho tx more likely?
Previous trauma or compromised tooth (e.g. large/deep restoration)
What could be reasons for treatment failure?
Poor diagnosis, poor treatment planning, poor operator technique, poor pt cooperation, unfavorable growth
