Risk Stratification Flashcards
Exercise Physiology
Study of human adaptability to acute and chronic exercise
Physical Activity (PA)
Any body movement produced by muscle contraction that results in a substantial increase over resting expenditure
Exercise
A type of PA that is planned, has structure and consists of repetitive body movements with the purpose of improving or maintaining one or more components of physical fitness
Three major risk factors for disease
HTN, smoking, elevated cholesterol
Other risk factors for disease
Elevated triglycerides, abnormal glucose tolerance, sedentary lifestyle, increased BMI/waist circumference, family history of CAD, age, gender, race
Risk Factor Classification NON MODIFIABLE
Age
Sex
Family history
Glucose tolerance
Risk Factor Classification MODIFIABLE
HTN
Sedentary lifestyle
Glucose tolerance
Cholesterol
Aerobic fitness can lower SBBP by
4-9mmHg
weight loss can lower SBP________ for each _______ lost
5-20 mmHg
22
Cholesterol Numbers
239mg/dL high risk
Raise HDL
Quit smoking
Aerobic fitness
healthy BMI
Smoking Cessation- 5 A’s
- Ask about tobacco use
- Advise people to quit
- Assess their willingness to quit
- Assist quitting through counseling or referral
- Arrange for follow-up
If HDL count is >____ mg/dL it protects you from heart disease and you can remove one point from your risk stratification score
60
Low risk medical clearance
No medical clearance necessarily cleared for all intensities of exercise
Moderate Risk
> /= 45 men and >/= 55 women or those with >/= 2 risk factors
