What are the 3 types of risk?
Absolute risk
Perceived risk
Actual risk
What is absolute risk?
The uppermost limit of risk in a particular situation or activity, assuming safety has not been considered
The worst case scenario risk
What is perceived risk?
The subjective assessment that a person makes about the risk they are about to face is some situations.
Can vary dramatically
What is actual risk?
The risk that actually exists for a particular situation or activity, given that safety has been considered and controls are put in place.
What is a positive response?
One that will react in positive behaviours towards that place
Behaviours that might protect, preserve or enhance that place in some way
What are 2 examples of positive responses?
Awe
Inspiration
What is Awe?
The feeling of wonder or admiration for an outdoor environment
What is inspiration?
A feeling about the outdoor environment that leads a person to want to do something or create something
What is a negative response?
One that will probably lead to damaging behaviours or dangerous actions with respect to an outdoor environment
Such as the desire to clear it, change it or remove things from it
What are 2 examples of negative responses?
Fear
Curiosity
What is fear?
An unpleasant feeling resulting in a belief that something about an outdoor environment is dangerous
What is curiosity?
A feeling of wanting to know more, to understand and outdoor environment in more detail or in other ways
Is both positive and negative because the behaviours resulting from it may differ from positive to negative
What is ‘as we age’?
As a person ages their character, personality, experiences and values change, the ways they respond to particular outdoor environments may also change
What is ‘as society changes’?
Society as a whole changes over time and this can lead to society-wide changes in the we respond to particular places.
What is Risk?
The potential to lose that you value, measured against the possibility of gaining something that you value
