Risk Flashcards
What is a risk
The probability of occurrence of some unwanted event or outcome
What is a hazard?
Anything that can potentially cause harm
Why do some people overestimate risk? (3 things)
Because the risk is unfamiliar, unfair or dreaded
Why do some people underestimate risk? (2 things)
Because they feel too safe or the effect is in the long term future
What is a cohort study?
When a group of people are followed over a long period of time to see if they develop the disease
Is a cohort study retrospective or prospective?
Prospective
What is a case- control study?
Where a group of people with the disease are compared to a group without the disease, their histories are studied to see if they were exposed to risk factors
Is a case control study retrospective or prospective?
Retrospective
What is a positive correlation?
When an increase in one variable is accompanied with an increase in the other variable
What is a causal correlation?
When a change in one variable is responsible for a change in the other
What are the two non-controllable risk factors for Cardiovascular disease (CVD)?
Genetic inheritance and age (as arteries become less elastic with age)
What are five controllable risk factors for CVD?
High blood pressure, obesity, blood cholesterol (and other dietary factors), smoking and lack of physical activity
