Q

Why was the LRC formed in 1900?

A

The trade unions felt more direct political action was needed because of the tough economic climate in the 1890s. At the TUC in Feb 1900, the SDF, Fabians and ILP were invited to send delegates. Hardie persuaded them to set up a committee to establish a party designated to Labour. This committee was called the LRC

Q

What and when was the Trades Disputes Act?

A

In 1906, the Liberal Government originally proposed a bill offering partial immunity for unions however it was countered by the Labour which had its own bill of full immunity. Campbell-Bannerman committed the government to accepting the Labour version showing the influence the Labour Party had.

When and what was the Education Act?

A

In 1906, it gave direct aid to malnourished schoolchildren also known as the Provision of Meals Act. It was Labour initiative mostly however it was hardly imposed on the government. Liberal government seized on the proposal though and made it a government policy.

Q

What led to the Party’s decline in political power?

A

The Labour Party didn’t really force the Liberals into passing their bills between 1906 and 1910. Issues such as female suffrage caused problems as many trade unionists did not agree with women having the vote. However, more committed socialists agreed with women’s suffrage thus creating divisions within the party.
