12
Q

what does the editing suggest in riptide

A

The editing together of seemingly different
images lets audience interpretation
linking to Eisenstein’s theory of “intellectual montage” where
new ideas emerge from the collision
of images and generate new meanings
that might not otherwise exist

eg ‘my friends are turning green’ - paired with 2 people and dollar bills.

Q

is their narrative in riptide

A

it rejects a
clearly defined narrative.
are some
short coherent narrative sequences -
the scene where the girl goes missing in the
graveyard. but for the most part the sequences
deliberately lack narrative continence.

Q

does riptide meet or subvert mv conventions

A

the overt and deliberate way the
lyrics are interpreted in this music video
might be subverting this convention:
The opening line “I was scared of dentists
and the dark” is interpreted explicitly
with a shot of a female looking “scared”
with a metallic contraption in her mouth
that suggests she is in a dentist’s chair and
followed by a shot of a light swinging in
a darkened room. This overt graphical
representation of the lyrics is largely
repeated throughout the video

Q

does riptide reference feature films

A

The opening shot makes use of cinematic
style credits and information about
the music is presented with a title at
the bottom of the screen. This title is
graphically similar to a “billing block”
or “credit block” which is often seen on
film posters or in trailers.
Is the video presenting itself as a short film or a music video?

16
Q

what genre of film is referenced

A

Western and Thriller genres (and
arguably the hipster style of Wes
Anderson films)

17
Q

what is most notable film genre referenced

A

Horror genre iconography, e.g.
females repeatedly dragged off screen
by unseen forces and a character
going missing in a dark graveyard.
use of references to film is attempting to
offer an implied artistic value that
transcends the music video form

18
Q

why was riptide (his first USA single 2013) made to both subvert and meet mv expectations whist Georgia 2015 wasn’t

A

video might have been designed to confer
a sense of uniqueness or intrigue to the band. Vance Joy are been marketed to
audiences through the style of the video to create a bigger impact and draw in audience through difference to genre

19
Q

Barthes in riptide

A

“Oh, all my friends are turning green”.
colour green in relation to both money and
envy - this could be said to have achieved
Barthes’ myth with its complicated readings of the image. The polysemic could be
interpreted in a variety of ways - is it
implying that friends (possibly in other
bands) have “sold out” by giving into money?
Or might instead these friends be turning
green with envy at the success of Vance Joy

20
Q

what are the conventions of an indie folk MV

A

low-fi video with bands playing instruments (different to riptide which brings variation and therefore money as he is a new artist)
