- Recognize and define the problem
- Reflect on it

Moral Sensitivity
recognizing there is a moral issue happening
identifying personal beliefs that are involved in the situation
Moral Judgement
The individual considers possible actions and what the effect will be on all parties involved
Realizing that there is a right adn a wrong
Moral Motivation
you will need to put your moral values above other values, even when you are not getting support to do this (Financial/ Self-Interest)
Moral Courage
taking action to correct a wrong
Ethical Temptation
there is a clear “right” choice, but you stand to benefit directly from the “wrong” choice: RIGHT V WRONG
Ethical Distress
you know the right course of action, but have no authority to act
Ethical Dilemma
right v right (only one can be followed)
Dual Loyalty Dilemma
Choosing loyalty to employer or loyalty to your patient
5 Questions about a Dilemma
- Is anything illegal happening?
- Stench test?
- Front Page test?
- Mom test
- do the core documents have anything to offer?
Ethical Silence
Practitioner is fully aware of the problem but chooses to ignore and takes no action, no action taken.
Step 2: Reflect on it
who, what, 5 dilemma questions, foundational concepts, relevant laws, duties, ethical pronciples
Step 3: Decide on a course of action
rule-based, end-based, care-based
Rule-based
“standard of care” following the rules that are already in place
Ends-based approach
do what produces the greatest good for the greatest number of people
looks more at the general good for society and less and the individual’s needs
care-based approach
do unto others as you would have done unto you
usually help resolve relationships and concern for others
Step 4: Implement, Evaluate, and Reassess
put into action
did it work?
Were there any unexpected results?
did you or others learn?
