Autonomy
The right of patients to self-determine. The right to make decisions about their healthcare.
Professional autonomy
degree to which members of the profession are granted the freedom and ability to make professional judgements
beneficence
obligation to promote the good of the patient/client
code of ethics
11 basic principles adopted by and revised as needed by the house of delegates to guide the ethical behavior of PT’s in the APTA
confidentiality
the obligation not to disclose information about a patient/client to people who are not authorized to know the info
ethics
systematic rational on issues of right or wrong or regarding what we “ought to do”
Justice
Fairness
Distributive justice
fairness in distribution of resources benefits, rights or responsibilities
compensatory justice
fairness in compensating those who have been harmed or wronged
procedural justice
due process or fair processes
legal
relating to local, state, or national laws. Rules, administrative codes, regulations created by administrative agencies to interpret, delineate, or implement legislation.
Morality
action based on traditions, laws, values, customs – behavior on autopilot without reflection or analysis that is involved with ethics
non-maleficence
the obligation to prevent harm to patient
“do no harm”
paternalism
promoting the patient as construed by the heath care practitioner (rather than the patient/client)
values
standards of quality, worth, desirability, good vs bad, or right vs wrong
