Rio - Duran Duran Flashcards
What do the close-ups of women smiling suggest?
They are happy and perhaps like the attention they are being given by the men.
How have women been represented throughout the video?
Initially, women have been represented as merely an object there to appeal to men’s sexual desires. According to Propp’s narrative theory the women could be seen as ‘princesses’ due to being damsels in distress.
Towards the middle to the end, the women begin to tease the men which could be a turning point inspired by the wave of feminism in the late 1980s. Women could now be perceived as ‘villains’ due to teasing the men.
What does the man watching the women through the telescope indicate?
Women appeal to the ‘male gaze’ and are solely there to please men. As a modern audience we may find this somewhat creepy although in the 1980s this would have been seen as acceptable. Could also be viewed as misogynistic.
What do the men wearing suits imply?
The band are wealthy, successful and fashionable for the time period. The bright colours could also make them appear as fun and outgoing.
Are women sexualised?
Yes
