Ring flips Flashcards
When performing a ring flip conformation
the bonds that are in the equatorial position become axial and the bonds that are in the axial positions become equatorial (the directions stay the same)
A chair conformation that has substituents in the axial position
will be less stable due to the 1,3 diaxial interactions
A chair conformation that has substituents in the equatorial positions
will be more stable since there will be minimal steric interactions
if a large group (like tert-butyl) is on a chair conformation
the chair conformation will be locked in place since the preferred position is equatorial
which conformation is preferred
the one with the most equatorial bonds and the least diaaxial interactions
the larger the group
the more steric strain
when is a chair conformation trans
when one group is pointing up and the other is pointing down
when is a chair conformation cis
when both groups are pointing in the same direction
how many degrees of unsaturation in an alkyne
