What are human/natural rights?
Rights and liberties that all people are afforded. They are ‘absolute’ and so cannot be compromised or diminished. They are universal, meaning they are afforded to everyone equally. They are fundamental and so can’t be removed for any reason.
What are individual rights/civil liberties?
These are the main protections citizens have on government intrusion their individual rights and civil liberties. Basic freedoms that allow people to express themselves without fear of repression from a police state.
What are the two different types of civil liberty?
~fundamental right - something you get just from existing
~fundamental freedoms - something you have to actively exercise
What is the difference between civil liberties and human rights?
Human Rights are not legally binding, whereas civil liberties are codified laws used to protect human rights. You could have human rights without having civil liberties
What is a positive right?
Clearly given to a citizen, usually in the form of a constitutional protection
What is a negative right?
Aren’t explicitly set out and exist only because of the absence of any law banning them
