1215 - What was the act?
Magna Carta - imposed various restrictions on the monarchy to prevent the arbituary abuse of power by the monarch.

Bill of rights - Imposed greater limits on the power of the monarchy as well as setting out parliamentary rights ( regular parliaments, free elections & parliamentary free speech)

European Convention of Human Rights - Government actions had to comply with the ECHR and could only be challenged in the European court of human rights not in UK courts.

European court of Justice - the UK joined the European economic community, the European court of justice could protect workers’ rights in the UK

Data Protection Act - Established protections surrounding personal information held by public institutions and was updated in 1988 and 1998.

Human Rights Act - codified the ECHR into british law and replaced most common law and allowed citezens to access rights protection through the UK legal system leading to the development of “rights culture” in the uk
An example of the Human Rights Act
2020 - Shamima Begum who had joined the Islamic state when she was 15, the court of appeal stated she should be allowed to return to the UK to participate in the case regarding the removal of her citezenship.

Freedom of Information Act - enabled political transparency by allowing citizens to access any non security related information held by public institutions through requests.

2009 MP’s expenses scandal which only came to light after a freedom of information request.

Equality Act - consolidated and codified all anti discriminatory measures into one document including those based on race, gender, sexuality and disability to ensure equal and consistent right provisions
