  1. They were refused. the Arkansas governor used armed forces to stop students even though it was illegal but the president intervened and sent an army to allow them to go.

A

He attempted to enrol in the Oxford campus of uni of Mississippi. This prompted riots and threats from the KKK. He eventually enrolled.

Who were the freedom riders?

A

A group of activists who wanted to test the effect of the Us Supreme Court’s 1960 decision to end racial discrimination on public transport. They would sit side by side on buses or in restaurants together black and white, ignoring segregation in toilets and drinking fountains etc.

What often happened to freedom riders? What happened in jail?

A

They were attacked by KKK and corrupt police. They were then refused medical assistance. They would also be arrested. In jail they would sing and in some cases they would be set free due to annoyance.
