Right realism Flashcards
Right Realism
Comes from the perspectives of right wing parties (conservative).
They believe criminals make a rational choice to commit crimes and we should have a zero tolerance policy.
Believe media exaggerates crime and creates folk devil of working class.
Rational choice
3 Main Causes
Criminals will weigh up the pros and cons of committing the crime before they commit it.
Lower risk and higher reward make them more likely to commit the crime.
Crime will increase in areas where there is little risk of getting caught or punished for commiting crimes
The under class
3 Main causes
The term Underclass refers too the class of people right at the bottom of socitey.
This has lead too a change in family structure, poor primary socialisation, the growth of the welfare state and is seen as a threat to social cohesion
Charles Murray (1989)
Broken Window Thesis
This theory focuses on the signs of disorder in communities and the concern that this could lead to others to have.
Neighbourhoods with no control over behaviour will have police turn a blind eye- this means the respectable people will move out and poorer people might not be able to move.
The area will then become a magnet for devient behaviour and this will be continued.
Then the area will get labelled as unsafe, poor and become run down
Wilson and Kelling (1982)
