right realism Flashcards
what idea did Charles murray develop
- The underclass
what does the welfar state create+ encourage?
- creates an over-dependency
- and encourages single parenthood (throough policies liek child benefits) + discrourages working for a living
why do young boy from lone-parent families turn to crime?
- they grow up without male rolemodel + without example of paid employment
- leading to criminal underclass of jobless, welfare-depepndent ppl who lack fatherly disciplne and look elsewhere for role models
what is the main aim of right realissts
- crime prevention + control of crime
- rather than why ppl commit crime
how should crime even minor crime be dealt with?
- harsher policies like zero tolerance to maintain social order
criticism of right realist
- It is true children from lone-parent faimilies are more likely to commit low-level, anti-social behaviour behaviour rather than serious crimes
- so lone-parent families arent the main factor in crime but maybe social class
what do right realists is realted to increased chances of committing crime
inadequate socialisation + lack of community controls
broken window theory by Wilson + Kelling?
- visisble signs of a run down environment + misbehaviour encourages further vandalism + misbehaviour,
- leading to serious crime bc low-level crime is tolreated
how did this concept influence policy?
- influenced new york policies in 1990’s
- zero tolerance policing, low- level crime taken more seriously
how should crime be tackled according to right realists?
focus on control, containment + punishment of crime
what is a catalyst of greater deviance/crime
unkempt neighbourhoods, broken windows theory, graffiti
what should be used a deterrent to stop crime
fines + prison sentences
criticism of zero tolerance policy solution?
Young, claims success is a myth –> crime was already falling, cities which did not have this policies had a fall of crime
criticism of right realism
- the policy solution of zero tolerance focuses too heavily on petty crime/street crime more than corporate/white collar crime which arguably has a greater impact on society. e.g. tax evasion
left realist criticism of traditional Marxists
state they need to focus and address working class crime
left realist criticism of neo-marxists
criticise them for Romanticising working class criminals as ‘robin hoods’ since the main victims of w/c crime is the w/c
left realist criticism of labelling theorists
ignores the real victim and states criminals are victims, so shifts blame away
