RIF Pain: Differential Flashcards
Acute pain radiating from periumbilical areas, associated with anorexia and profuse vomiting
Appendicitis
Chronic, associated change in bowel habit (particularly diarrhoea) and signs of malnutrition
Crohn’s disease
Typically affects children, some causative organisms include adenoviruses, EBV, beta-haemolytic Streptococcus, E. coli
Mesenteric adenitis
Acute pain, with change in bowel habit in an elderly patient
Diverticulitis
Sharp, sudden onset and may occur alongside upper quadrant pain
Perforated peptic ulcer
Diffuse abdominal pain but may initially localise to RIF if caecal distension, commonly occurring alongside obstruction
Bowel perforation secondary to caecal or colon carcinoma

- Salpingitis
- Pelvic abscess
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Ovarian torsion
- Threatened/Complete miscarriage
- Mittleschermz
List 3 Urological causes
- Ureteric colic
- UTI
- Testicular torsion
