Aims of the plot?
A
(1571) Roberto Ridolfi (spy for Pope) wanted to murder Elizabeth and replace her with Mary Queen of Scots. Thomas Howard (Duke of Norfolk) was to marry Mary. They also wanted to launch a Spanish invasion.

What happened in the plot?
A
Ridolfi had a letter signed by Thomas Howard declaring he was Catholic and would lead the rebellion if Philip II would support it.

How did the plot fail?
A
When Ridolfi was away discussing the plot with Philip II and the Pope, the plot was discovered and Thomas Howard was executed. (There were letters proving his guilt.)
