Dutch Revolt Flashcards
Why did the Catholics and Protestants revolt in 1566?
Because Philip II decided to reorganise the Dutch government and church in the 1550s, using the Spanish Inquisition (an event known for torturing those who refused Catholicism) to enforce Catholicism.
What was the Council of Troubles?
An enforcement method for Catholicism in the Netherlands, established by the Duke of Alba. Made up of Dutch nobles and Spanish officials.
Why was Elizabeth concerned?
Alba’s army from the Dutch Catholics and Protestants revolt was near England.
What was the Genoese Loan?
In 1568, Spanish ships carrying gold to pay Alba’s ships took refuge in England. Elizabeth kept the money because it didn’t belong to Spain.
What did Philip II ban in the Netherlands and how did Elizabeth react?
English cloth and Elizabeth reacted by ceasing to trade altogether with the Netherlands.
