Ribs Flashcards
classification of ribs (T/F)
true: 1 - 7
false: 8 - 10 (connected by cartilage to cart of rib 7)
floating ribs: 11 - 12
classification of ribs (typical/atypical)
typical (3-9): head, neck, tubercle, angle, shaft
atypical: 1 (greatest curve, shortest, no angle/groove, 1 articular facet); 2 (like 1, not as flat, 2 articular facets); 10 (only 1 articular facet); 11/12 (no neck/tubercle, 1 articular facet, no costotransverse joint)
radiate ligament
attach rib head to vertebral body
superior costotransverse ligament
connect neck of rib to superior transverse process
costotransverse ligament
connect rib to same/lower transverse process
primary rib motion
1-5 = pump handle 6-10 = bucket handle 11-12 = caliper
sternal articulations
1: manubrium
2: angle of Louis
3-6: sternal body
7: xiphoid/body
principle muscles of inspiration
