ribonucleic acids Flashcards
what is the composition of the 3 ribonucleic acids?
mRNA is 5% of the total RNA, rRNA is 80% of total RNA, and tRNA is 15% of total RNA
what is mRNA used for?
mRNA is transcripted from a DNA template via transcription in the nucleus and it is exported out into the cytoplasm to be translated into a polypeptide via the ribosome
what is rRNA used for?
rRNA is synthesised in the nucleolus to form ribosomal subunits, which comprise 60% of the ribosome
what is tRNA used for?
tRNA consists of around 80 nucleotides, folding into a t-loop structure linked by hydrogen bonds. one amino acid is attached to it at each end and the amino acid attached corresponds with the nucleotide sequence complementary to the code in the mRNA. it also helps to transport mRNA to the ribosome
