Q

Why would I pick 6/8 over 3/4 or vice versa?

A

3/4 groups quavers into groups of 2, and 6/8 groups them into groups of 3.

If the piece is mainly composed of quavers or semiquavers, you would choose 6/8.

If the piece is mainly composed of crotchets and minims with quavers, you would pick 3/4.

Q

How much semiquavers is a double dotted breve worth? How do you know?

A

56 semiquavers. A breve is twice the length of a whole note (semibreve). A semibreve is worth 2 half notes (minims), 4 quarter notes (crotchets), 8 eighth notes (quavers), or 16 sixteenth notes (semiquavers). A double dotted note is adding half the notes value and half half of the notes value. In this case, that is a semibreve + a minim.
