Tells how many beats are in a bar (e.g. 4/4 2/4)
Time-signature
The beat is divided into 3 (e.g. 6/8 is two beats each lasting 3 quavers)
Compound time-signature
The beat is divided into 2 (4/4 is 4 beats each lasting 2 quavers)
Simple time-signature
Weak beast of the bar are emphasised
Syncopation
Simple rhythm each beat is accented- no syncopation
On beat
Rhythm where 2 bars of 3/4 become 3 bars of 2/4 (momentary change)
Hemiola
Expressive change in tempo (often used in romantic music)
Rubato
SImultaneous use of of several rhythmic patterns (e.g. 3/2)
Polyrhythm
Bass drum on beats 1 and 3, snare on beats 2 and 4 (feature of rock and pop music, some traditional music)
Backbeat
Straight quavers in a bar become pairs of long and short notes
Shuffle/ Swing rhythm
