What is Rhinosinisitus
Inflammatory response involving:
Mucous membranes of nose and paranasal sinuses
Fluid within cavities
+/- underlying bone infection
acute
less than 1 month
Follows Upper RTI 2ary bacteria infection
Clinical presentation
Preceding URTI Nasal congestion Mucopus ant or post Facial pains Examination inflamed mucosa or pus
Chronic rhinosinutsutis CRS
> 12 weeks
Often preceded by acute episode
Causes - strep
CRS investigations
Nasoendoscopy, allergy screen RAST blood test
No reason to XRAY
CT Scanning excellent bob do not her you make a diagnosis only used to plan a surgery
CRS Manag
- Topical steroid spray
- topics steroid drops
- oral steroids
- Surgery (FESS/Polypectomy)
NB Antihistamine and antibiotics
FESS
functional endoscopy sinsus surgery
Complications of Rhinosinusitis
Acute- Orbital, Intracranial, Bony (osteomyelitis), Toxic Shock
Chronic - Muccoele/pyocelle
Orbital cellulitis
Sick, silo-is, poppotis,
Muccocele
Chronic collection of mucus or fluid in sinus
