What is rhinitis?
Inflammation of the mucosa of the nose
What are the types of rhinitis?
Allergic
Non-allergic
NB: this is like “asthma of the nose”
What are the clinical differences between allergic and non-allergic rhinitis?
Label this nasal tract.
Left nasal cavity
IT - Inferior turbinate
S - Septum
V - Vestibule - facial skin before you get to nasal mucosa
How do ITs change?
One is always bigger than other side as they fluctuate every few hours
Cobblestoning shown on bottom right of allergic - red dots are the points of attachment to the cartilage so you can see that surrounding mucosa is swollen
What is this sign called?
Allergic salute - eventually causes the allergic crease sign as below
What serum test is used to determine allergy (generally)?
Serum total IgE
How is allergic rhinitis classified?
Mild vs mod/severe and Intermittent vs persistent
Used to be seasonal and perrenial
What is the treatment ladder for allergic rhinitis?
Which symptoms must you always ask about in allergic rhinitis?
