Define myringotomy.
A
Surgical perforation of the tympanic membrane to provide middle ear ventilation using tympanostomy tube placement.

What are the indications for myringotomy?
A
- Conductive hearing loss due to middle ear effusion
- Control recurrent otitis media
- Prevent acquired cholesteatoma due to retraction pocket

What are the complications of myringotomy?
A
- Chronic, recurrent bloody otorrhoea
- Persistent ear pain, deterioration in hearing
- Balance problems
- Tympanostomy tube obstruction
- Tube migration into the middle ear
- Myringosclerosis
- Cholesteatoma
- Focal atrophy of the TM

When are myringotomy tubes usually removed?
A
After 2-3 yrs
NB: there is increased risk of persistent perforation if the tube is kept in for longer.
