What are osteophytes?
Bony projections occurring at joint edges in osteoarthritis as new bone is laid down in response to injury
What is osteoarthritis?
Non-inflammatory, degenerative progressive destruction of cartilage from repeated mechanical forces
Disruption of the chondrocytes prevents rebuilding
What are the risk factors for osteoarthritis?
Older age
Women
Obesity
Occupation/sports
What are the signs of osteoarthritis?
Proximal Bouchard nodes (PIP joints)
Distal Heberden nodes (DIP joints)
What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?
Painful joints stiff for 30 minutes or less in the morning
Worse throughout the day
What is the management for osteoarthritis?
Lifestyle changes
NSAID analgesia
Surgery (last resort)
What is the triad that points towards felty syndrome?
Rheumatoid arthritis
Idiopathic neutropenia
Splenomegaly
