-Group A streptococcal bacteria

A
- One off penicillin injection
- 10 days oral AB’s

What is rheumatic fever?
A
-Group A streptococcal bacteria.Starts as strep throat but if untreated with AB’s can lead to rheumatic fever

What are the risk factors for rheumatic fever?
A
-Repeated and untreated strep throat

What are some symptoms of rheumatic fever?
A
- Sore/swollen joints
- Ongoing fever
- Rash on elbow/ wrist ect

What is the diagnostic test of rheumatic fever?
A
- No test
- Medical history
- Throat swab

What are some complications of rheumatic fever?
A
-Symptoms may go away over time but one inflammation can lead to rheumatic heart disease

What is the treatment of rheumatic fever?
A
-10 years on penicillin injection or until 21 years old
