allegory
a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political meaning
ex. Aslan as Christ & Edmund as Judas
allusion
an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference
ex. she acted like a scrooge
anachronism
an error in chronology or when a thing is in an inappropriate time period
an egyptian pharaoh wearing a wrist watch
anaphora
a deliberate repetition of the first part of a sentence to achieve artistic and empathetic effect
antithesis
a placement of two opposite ideas of concepts in a sentence for contesting effect
aphorism
condensed observation that contains a general truth ex: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch
colloquialism
type of language or word usage specific to a geographic location
ex: soda/pop/cola
soccer/football
connotation:
refers to a meaning that is implied by a word from the thing which it describes explicitly
ex: a dove implies peace of gentility
counter argument
an argument set apart to oppose an idea or theory developed in another
deductive reasoning
based on premises and if the premises are true, then reasoning will be valid ex: Since all humans are mortal, and I am human. Then I am mortal.
denotation
defined as the literal or dictionary meaning of a word
ex: “chick” literally means “baby bird”
dialect
language used by a specific area, class, district, or group of people involving spelling & grammar
diction:
the style of speaking or writing determine by the choice of words by a speaker or writer
ex: “thou, thee” = formal diction
ethos
represent credibility or a ethical appeal
ex: “I recommend this meditation, I am a doctor so I am qualified”
euphemism
refers to a polite, indirect expression which replaces a word or phrase that is harsh
ex: passed away instead of died
