allegory
a story written that contains a literal meaning and a symbolic meaning
alliteration
when you use words that have the same sound/letter at the beginning,
ex: shake so my single state (macbeth)
allusion
referencing another work, historical, person or event
analogy
compares two things together to clarify the idea
ex: Just as a sword is the weapon of a warrior, a pen is the weapon of a writer.
anecdote
brief tale narrating an interesting personal incident
ex: the summer I turned 13 was full of adventures
anti climax
exciting event and then suddenly something boring or disappointing happens; this is an anti-climax.
antithesis
is a rhetorical device using two opposite ideas put together in a sentence to achieve a contrasting effect.
ex: “Give me liberty or give me death.”
chiasmus(reverse parallelism)
the first sentence relates to the second sentence making it paralleled(balance) only in reverse order
ex: Never let a fool kiss you, or a kiss fool you
climax
arranging of sentences to create importance or emotional force on the one topic ex Susans reply is..
ex: susan’s reply annoyed her brother, angered her mother and enraged her husband
ex: This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men,

figure of speech to allow readers to reflect on the question
ex:how many roads must a man walk down before they call him a man?
