When you focus on the similarities between concepts and ideas
Contrast/juxtaposition
When you focus on the differences between concepts and ideas
Denotation
The dictionary definition or literal meaning of a word or phrase
Connotation
An association called upon by a word what is beyond its dictionary definition - the contextual meaning
Ex. Home : love, safety, acceptance (for some)
Emotive language
The deliberate coice of words to elicit a specific emotion
Ex. “The victims were executed in cold blood.”
Opinion
A statement that expresses a belief of a particular person, but is open to question/disagreement
Fact
Can be proved to be absolutely correct and cannot be disputed
Ex. The plot of a text is “fact” : you can’t argue what happened in a book or play
Quotation
Actual statements made by a professionals that help verify the argument being made.
Explicit thesis
A thesis that’s directly stated (can be highlighted)
Implicit thesis
Implied thesis, must be inferred
Can NOT be highlighted
Foreshadowing
When the author HINTS at what is going to happen
Hypophora
Consists of asking, then answering a question right after
Humour
Can be overall tone or certain parts of writing
Repetition
Can be applied to both ideas and diction
