Where is Rheinhessen and what rivers border it?
Directly south of Rheingau, directly east of Nahe.
rivers: Rhein on north and east, Nahe on west, Pfaltz on south. (Rhein and Nahe meet at the town of Bingen)

Why have hybrids and heartier grape varietals been so widely planted in Rheinhessen?
The further away from the rivers, the more cold and extreme the climate. Muller-Thurgau, the most planted variety, reflects that. Riesling is planted mostly in “Rheinterrasse”, closer to the banks of the river.

A quality wine vineyard region along the western banks of the Rhein, from Bodenheim to Mettenheim. Import communes include Nierstein and Oppenheim. (area is larger than the rheingau). Most prestigious sector is “roter hang”

Area of Red clay and slate within the Rheinterrasse, between Nierstein and Nackenheim (180ha), northeastern Rheinhessen.
