What is an ortsteil?
“District”
A German term referring to an area that’s part of a larger commuity (as a suburb is of a city), yet is independent of that larger community. Some famous vineyards are considered an ortsteil, and are excused from adding the village name on the label (e.g. Scharzhofberg, Schloss Johannisberg)
What is Edelfäule?
Noble rot.
What is Weissherbst?
A saignée rosé wine made from a single varietal and of at least QbA quality.

What are three alternatives to putting GG on a label and where are they commonly used?
Erstes Gewächs, frequently seen in the Rheingau. Trademarked term by the Charta, allowed to be spelled out on the label, unlike “GG”.
Erste Lage, used in Mosel.
More sporadically, some producers also use “GC” for Grand Cru.
What does “Classic” indicate?
Dry-ish (max 15g/l sugar) Single varietal No vineyard named Min. alcohol 12% (11.5% in Mosel) Legally recognized term, not a popular as VDP.
What does “Selection” indicate?
Superior to Classic Dry (max 9g/l sugar, 12g/l for Riesling) Single vineyard, single varietal Max yield 60hl/ha Ripeness of Auslese Hand Harvested Not released before Sept 1 of following year
What is a Goldkapsel?
Gold colored capsule, generally indicating additional sweetness due to a higher must weight, most commonly seen on Auslese bottlings. Longer capsules used to denote extra quality and sweetness.
What do stars indicate when added after a Prädikat level?
Harvested at a higher level of ripeness than required for that level, and is generally a sweeter wine.
