RF Equipment Flashcards
What is Radio Frequency (RF)?
Frequencies used to transmit signals over a distance
What is Intermediate Frequency (IF)?
Frequencies used to standardize a transmission system
What are Baseband signals?
Any user signal in its original format prior to multiplexing and modulation
What is a Multiplexer?
Combines Baseband Signals into a single data stream
What is a Vector Signal Generator (VSG)?
- A sophisticated radio
- No actual data sent, modulates pseudo random noise sequence
- No FEC
What is a MODEM (MOD and DE-MOD)?
Modulator
1. Modifies carrier wave
2. Adds FEC
3. Digital to analog conversion
Demodulator
1. Strips away FEC
2. Analog to digital conversion
What is Heterodyning?
The process of mixing two frequencies to achieve a desired output
What does an Upconverter do?
- Converts IF to RF
- Adds active gain
What does a Downconverter do?
Converts RF to IF
What does an HPA do?
- Adds active gain to overcome Free Space Loss
What three things does a Low-Noise Amplifier do?
- Raises amplitude of received signals after Free Space Loss
- Filters out-of-band noise
- Combined with Downconverter to create LNB
What is the TTF?
TTF ensures that the uplink and downlink frequencies are properly aligned and synchronized (not conflicting)
What is a Spectrum Analyzer?
Visual representation of the EMS (Frequency Domain).
2 Mission Functions:
Signal characterization
Signal monitoring
