Rewilding Flashcards
Provide an example of a rewilding project.

What is the difference between conservation projects and Rewilding?
Conservation projects -
Have specific aims and targets (e.g. prevent biodiversity loss, take place on land of high ecological value, and use pre-colonial ecosystems as a baseline).
Rewilding -
This is process-driven and aims to restore natural processes and thereby increase biodiversity.
What are the key features of Rewilding?
Large core protected areas
Ecological connectivity
Keystone species and trophic cascades
Implementing the 3C’s models
- Cores, corridors and Carnivores
What is principle 1 of rewilding?
Rewilding utilizes wildlife to restore trophic interactions.
Aim- to establish a self-sustaining ecosystem.
What is principle 2 of rewilding?
Rewilding employs landscape-scale planning that considers core areas, connectivity, and co-existence.
What is principle 3 of rewilding?
Focuses on the recovery of ecological processes, interactions, and conditions based on reference ecosystems.
When can reintroductions and proxies be used?
When a species is locally extinct
When a keystone species is globally extinct. This can be replaced by non-native/domesticated proxies to perform the same role.
