Introduction to Biodiversity Flashcards
What is the Nature emergency?
The rate at which species are becoming endangered and becoming extinct.
What are the major threats to biodiversity?
1- Habitat degradation
2- Overexploitation
3- Invasive spp. and disease
4- Pollutions
5- Climate change
What is biodiversity?
Variability among living organisms from all sources. Diversity within a species can be genetic and cultural (e.g., social teachings).
Where does genetic diversity come from?
A random mutation which generates diversity within a population.
Selected phenotypes that are best-adapted change allele frequencies.
How does reproductive isolation take place?
Genetic, geographic isolation, and gradual differences in phenotypic traits (e.g. visual, chemical, genitalia, etc).
What is the Cessation of gene flow?
the Allowance for species to evolve independently.
How does Specialisation take place?
Occurs through the accumulation of several traits.
