What was the plan?

A

Earls of Northumberland and Westmoreland would gather an army before taking control of Durham and heading south. Several thousand Spanish troops would join them and they would overthrow Elizabth making Mary queen.

What were the events?

A
  1. Rebels took control of Durham cathedral and celebrated a Catholic mass
  2. The took control over most of Northern England
  3. Most nobles stayed loyal to Elizabeth and soon they were forced to retreat and were eventually defeated.

The Spanish never arrived which partially led to the collapse of the revolt

Why did the Northern Earls revolt?

A

They felt they had a lack of power under Elizabeth and many of them were devout Catholics who refused to accept Protestantism.
