Samos
Island polis in the eastern Aegean, originally one of the strongest members of the Delian League and one of the last ship providers. Revolts in 440 BC and is reduced in approximately 439 BC.
Miletus
A polis on the western coast of Asia Minor and longstanding rival with Samos. A Miletun appeal in approximately 441 BC caused the Athenians to intervene in Samian affairs and eventually led to the revolt of Samos.
Priene
A small city on the Ionian coast, the subject of the dispute between Samos and Miletus in 441 BC.
Lemnos
An island in the northern Aegean, used to hold 50 Samian hostages after Pericles initially punished Samos in approximately 441 BC. Samos later rescues the hostages and openly declares war.
Pissouthnes
The Persian satrap of Asia Minor in 440 BC, allies with the revolting Samians, supplying them with 700 mercenaries to help them retake the city. Takes the Athenian garrison and garrison commander after Samos is captured by the revolting Samians, potentially re-igniting conflict with Persia again after the peace of Callias.
Chios
An island polis located on the eastern side of the Aegean Sea, one of the las independent ship-providing allies in 441 and assists Athens in finally subduing Samos in 439 BC.
Lesbos
An island polis located in the eastern Aegean, one of the last independent ship providing allies in 441 BC and assists Athens in finally defeating the Samian fleet in 439 BC.
Amphipolis
An Athenian colony established in c.437 to secure Athenian timber supplies in fear of the upcoming war.
Black Sea
An expedition pioneered by Pericles in c.436 to secure the Athenian grain routes in fear of the upcoming conflict with Sparta.
